  • Question about Depression

Does depression necessarily need to be treated with antidepressants?

Depression is a treatable illness. The majority of people with depressive disorders improve when they receive appropriate treatment.

However, several factors may impact the type of treatment you received. When suggesting a treatment, your doctor may consider: the type of depression that you may be suffering, the severity of your depression, the presence of co-morbidities, your particular symptoms, and of course your own preference.

In current guidelines, mild depression has the most variance in treatment recommendations. Some guidelines, but not all, suggest that it may resolve with exercise or watchful waiting, but psychotherapy or antidepressants could also be used.
Moderate and severe major depression carry broadly similar recommendations among the guidelines, including antidepressant monotherapy, psychotherapy or both.

But if you are unable or unwilling to take antidepressants, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) as shown to be effective as a sole treatment.

  • Question about Depression

Can a person with a greater tendency to depression have a stable relationship with a partner?

Depression is a disorder that often starts at young age, reduces people´s functioning and often is recurring. For these reasons, depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide in terms of total years lost due to disability.

It is however totally possible for a person with a greater tendency to depression to have a stable relationship. Nevertheless, it is important for the healthy partner to have some knowledge about the disorder and to offer support, encouragement and keep communicating during the depressive episodes. Despite what he or she may say, the depressed partner need his or her love more than ever.

Also important is the prevention of depression. Many preventive programs can be implemented across the lifespan, focusing on strengthening of protective factors and the reduction of risk factors.
