  • Question about Urological Ultrasound

Is it possible to carry out a prostate and kidney ultrasound scan on a male patient with a urinary catheter?

Yes this is easily possible to scan the kidneys with a urinary catheter in situ. However it is harder to see the prostate sufficiently with a catheter in unless the catheter is clamped and the bladder allowed to fill with urine to allow the Ultrasound to see through the bladder to prostate. It is also possible to examine the prostate with a transrectal ultrasound probe.
I hope this helps with your investigations.

  • Question about Urological Ultrasound

I've had blood in my urine for a month. The ultrasound scan was normal, the smear test I don't know yet. Could I have something in the bladder if the scan is normal?

Yes. An ultrasound of your bladder and kidneys is not sufficient if you have had visible blood or persistent microscopic blood in your urine. You will need a telescope examination of your bladder and a further test of your kidneys called either an IVP or CT Urogram to complete the testing.
    Hope this helps

    Mr. Rowan Casey
