I have a 16-and-a-half-year-old daughter with a very visible deviated nasal septum to the left. Due to this she has breathing problems and a huge complex. She wants to have it operated on and I've decided to let her go ahead with it. Is it recommended at her age or is it better to wait?

By your description I suspect she may have cartilage showing onto one side of the septum called septal collumelar dislocation. This requires septocolumelloplasty. Its usually best to avoid the operation until she is 17yrs plus.

I am not clear if she is having a septoplasty (to straighten the cartilage partition in the nose to help her breath better) OR a septorhinoplasty (to acheive the above and reshapen the nose to look better). Either way at 16, I would only do either operation if it was absolutely necessary. I would prefer not to do it if your daughter's facial bones are still growing. Once that is dealt with, I know from experience that all 16 year olds are not the same and each would have to be assessed on their merits before offering them surgery,

It would be best to wait until she is fully grown up unless she is having major problems with breathing. The septum contains a growth centre which is important for maxillary (skeleton of the mid-face) growth. In the average patient this is growth is complete at the age of 20 years. With 16 years of age there would only be an estimated change of about 5% which is minimal.
