Yes, all dental work has a lifespan, and quite often you don't get any warning of failure - so yes, veneers can and do just drop off. Sometimes they can be refixed, sometimes new ones are required. The ongoing maintenance of dental work should always be considered when planning the treatment in the first place.
For most people veneers would not be my first choice. To place veneers means taking a layer of tooth away: this irreversibly damages the teeth and leaves you with a lifetime of potentially costly maintenance. My preferred treatment would be tooth whitening, which can be very effective, virtually harmless and usually a lot cheaper. Ask your dentist for more advice on which option would suit your teeth best.
The porcelain itself is virtually impervious to stains. However the edge of the veneer can stain easily. A skilled dentist will place the edge hidden from view.
