Definition
Is a protein synthesized in the liver and it is the major copper-carrying protein in the blood. The copper bound to ceruloplasmin is non-toxic.
Lower than normal levels may indicate Wilson's disease, an inherited disorder of copper metabolism.
Since ceruloplasmin is an acute-phase reactant, it is frequently elevated in inflammation, severe infection, tissue damage and it may be increased in some cancers. In addition, increased levels can be found during pregnancy and with the use of estrogens, oral contraception and some medications.
