No-one knows why people get sebaceous cysts. Amongst doctors there is some uncertainty as to how they arise. But certainly some people do seem to have a tendency to get them, and often get more than one. They usually gradually increase in size over a period of years, and occasionally become infected, to form an abscess. Sebaceous cysts don't usually go away on their own, so people usually ask for them to be removed when they get larger and become noticeable.

Rodent ulcers are caused by sun exposure over a lifetime, not a single exposure to sun. If you have a rodent ulcer currently it is not dangerous to expose it to the sum - it wont change with sunlight. Whilst rodent ulcers are technically a skin cancer, they don't spread through the body, and won't kill you. They typically grow very slowly over years, but if left untreated for a long time they eventually cause problems and start to grow inwards. Someone who has previously had treatment for a rodent ulcer does not need to avoid the sun, they just need to do what we are all supposed to do in the sun - high factor sun creams and wear a hat!
